healthy friends

You are most like the 5 people you surround yourself with

Like it or not, it’s true. We are most influenced by those we spend most of our time with – for better or worse (and we want to be better, always!)

Chances are, the people in your life currently are either neutral or slightly negative towards your choice to live a healthier life. Whole foods, lots of salads, cooking more at home, less processed crap etc.

We went through the exact same process. Our friends and family reacted positively, negatively or neutral to our decision to go organic, whole food based and vegan. Even today, more than 4 years later, my mother says ‘Vegan’ as if it’s some kind of cult or weird experiment.

Stay Strong

Sarah and I were firm. It almost felt like we were drawing a line in the sand declaring “this is how we’re eating now, and we feel damn good when we do” and the relationships we valued most in our life sorted out naturally. It’s not that we don’t ever see or talk to those who don’t support our lifestyle and way of eating (like close family members) but we find that we aren’t drawn towards them as much because they don’t resonate with us and make us welcome and acceptable. We still love them though.

One thing we got excited about was meeting others who shared the same interest in eating a more whole food, plant-based diet.

We went to meetups and events in the vegan/vegetarian community and met loads of people who enjoyed similar recipes and activities that we did. At one point we even had our own group called the Seattle Healthetarians!

We were introduced to a whole world of vegans. Some people we met were pretty far out there, but some friendships we still have today.

Examples of Foodie Meetups:

  • vegan potlucks & social gatherings
  • cooking classes
  • vegetarian events

We also met a ton of runners – people who share a similar passion for breaking a sweat and tackling fitness feats like races and relays.

Examples of Fitness Meetups:

  • Running meetups
  • Yoga meetups & classes
  • Hiking meetups
  • Races like Ragnar, a 12 person relay team – such a great way to make friends who are just as crazy and outgoing as you are
  • Roadrunner sports first Thursday of the month run
  • Volunteering at events gives you a behind the scenes view and an easy way to make friends

Sarah and I realize we’re pretty fortunate to have each others backs for support. Interestingly enough, running and eating vegan brought us back together after a 6 month break back in 2010. However, we also know how doable it is to surround yourself with people you aspire to live like, be like, eat like – or even people who are where your at, on the same journey headed to a similar destination.

Hanging around like-minded people is essential to your success

Whether it’s eating more plants, less sugar or exercising more often – so don’t hold back on making it happen.

Our SD Community is always available as well, follow and friend as many cool people as you can find.

If you need support, just know that we’ll always have your back!
